Her professional work experiences include four years of managing army demobilization and reintegration programs in Ethiopia, four years of managing regional development programs in Ethiopia with Action Aid International, and more than 15 years of coordinating the implementation of the Africa Peace and Security Architecture (APSA) in the Horn of Africa with the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).

Notable professional achievements include successful implementation of the demobilization and reintegration of ex-soldier’s funded by the World Bank, and managing the establishment of the Regional Mediation Support Unit, and the Regional Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development program within IGAD.

She holds two Masters Degrees, including an MA in International Relations, and an MA in “Managing Peace and Security in Africa”, both from Addis Ababa University. Legawork additionally has several international diplomas including in “leadership and development studies” from Indian Institute of Development Studies, India, and “Peace and security studies in Africa” from Uppsala University, Sweden.

As a political scientist, Vilhelm has experience in peace and security initiatives across various countries, including Mozambique, Ukraine, Ethiopia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Nigeria. He has worked on disarmament, demobilisation, and reintegration (DDR) processes in multiple settings. At FBA, he supports different initiatives such as capacity building, advising and training. His recent work includes supporting DDR and the combat against violent extremism in Mozambique, as well as working with FBA’s support to veteran reintegration in Ukraine.

Previously, Vilhelm served as a Desk Officer at the Embassy of Sweden in Maputo, Mozambique. He holds a Master of Science in Politics from the London School of Economics (LSE) and a Bachelor’s degree in Politics from Lund University.

Simbarashe is also a research associate at Stellenbosch University in the department of Sociology and Social Anthropology. His research interests collectively contribute to an overarching theme of youth subjectivities and how these intersect in complex ways with various aspects of everyday life such as politics, livelihoods, and transitions. Simbarashe is also interested in questions around informality, religiosity, displacement, youth political expressions in spaces of protracted economic and political crisis.

Simbarashe was awarded the African Peacebuilding Network Research Fellowship (2021-2022) by the Social Sciences Research Council (SSRC), the African Humanities Programme Fellowship, from the American Learned Societies, Carnegie Corporation, New York, USA. Simbarashe’s recent publications are in African Affairs, the International Journal of Transitional Justice, African Security Review, African Identities, Political Psychology and the Extractive Industries and Society among other journals.

Simbarashe also serves as an editorial board member of Anthropology Southern Africa and the journal of Religion and Development.

Mark has a focus on identifying business opportunities, assessing ESG (environmental, social and governance) risks, responsible business conduct, value chain analysis, Disarmament, Demobilization & Reintegration (DDR), conflict analysis, conflict-sensitivity and security & human rights. He has worked worldwide in many fragile settings, including Cameroon, Chad, Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Liberia, Mali, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Sudan, Sudan, Colombia, Iraq, Lebanon and Pakistan.

Over the last 15 years, Mark has focused on action-oriented research and consultancy work on how to strengthen investors’ and companies’ strategies and operational capacity to work in a responsible way in fragile settings, as well as to improve value chains and support SMEs, Internally Displaced Persons, refugees and former combatants, with the ultimate goal to contribute to equitable development and peace building. He has worked in various capacities in projects financed by multinational companies, universities, NGOs (including IDH, SOMO, Oxfam Novib, International Alert, MercyCorps), multilateral institutions (including World Bank Group/IFC, UNDP, UNHCR, IOM, ITC), the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Swedish Folke Bernadotte Academy and the European Union.

In 2017, Mark founded Bureau Van Dorp, a consultancy firm specializing in responsible business and private sector development in emerging markets and fragile and conflict-affected settings, working in partnership with a network of international and local consultants. Since 2022, Mark is also a Senior Associate at ODI and a Research Associate at LSE IDEAS, the foreign think tank of the London School of Economics and Political Science.

He also serves as a commissioner with the high-level National Planning Commission (Presidency of the Republic of South Africa) where he chairs the Commission’s Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Task Team. Between 2012 and 2020 he was the Director of the Safety and Violence Initiative at the University of Cape Town. Prior to this he was a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for Security Studies (2006-2012), and Senior Researcher at the Centre for Conflict Resolution (2000-2005).

He is a National Research Foundation rated researcher and has undertaken research and published on crime and violence reduction, urban safety, policing and peace-building issues in Africa for more than 25 years. He has worked with numerous governments and various United Nations agencies on peace and security issues.

Dr. Lamb holds a Ph.D. in Criminology and a master’s degree in International and Comparative Politics from UCT.

Frida is a political scientist with over a decade of experience working on peace and security in among other contexts Zimbabwe, Liberia, Colombia and Mozambique. She has experience working for civil society, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and the United Nations. Additionally, she has through her role with the FBA worked closely with supporting the policy development of the EU and the OSCE.

Her most recent experience is from supporting security transitions, disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration (DDR) processes and reconciliation in Colombia and in Mozambique. Gender mainstreaming, the Women, Peace and Security agenda, SSR, DDR and training and capacity development constitute her key areas of expertise.

Julia conducts research on DDR, gender aspects of DDR processes, disarmament negotiations, mediation, and third-party interventions in civil wars. Julia conducted fieldwork in the Middle East and Asia and provided monitoring and evaluation work for FAO, Save the Children, and consultancy for various UN bodies.

Since 2010 he is a consultant providing analysis, management and advisory services to international organizations, governments and non-governmental organizations. From 2003 to 2010 he was Senior Social Development Specialist with the World Bank; from 2005 based in Kampala, Uganda. Before joining the World Bank, he worked among others as Project Leader for Demobilization and Peace-building at the Bonn International Center for Conversion (BICC) (1994-2003) and in various positions with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) (1987-93).

Kees has published and lectured widely on various aspects of post-war recovery, particularly the demobilization and reintegration of former combatants. Over the years Kees has worked in many African countries, such as Burundi, Eritrea, Mozambique, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan and Uganda, and also in Asian countries, such as Afghanistan, Nepal and Solomon Islands.

She has more than 30 years of experience in the field of child protection in emergencies mainly in Eastern Africa, Western Africa, Latin America, Asia and the Middle East. She  has worked with UNICEF and Save the Children for many years.  Fatuma has led the development and implementation of the programmes the release and reintegration of children associated with armed forces and armed groups in Liberia, South Sudan, Uganda, Democratic Republic of Congo, Philippines, Iraq, Syria and Nigeria. 

Fatuma leads/facilitates child protection courses at the International Peace Support Training Centre in Nairobi, Kenya. She is associated with Transition International (TI), a Netherlands based consulting agency and often facilitates reintegration courses that TI organizes jointly with the Barcelona International Peace Centre in Barcelona. She has also facilitated sessions on child reintegration during courses organized by the Folke Bernadotte Academy.  

Fatuma has a master’s degree in Counseling Psychology, a bachelor’s degree in Arts and Diplomas in Education and Social Work. She is a member of the  International Association of Facilitators.

She brings a development perspective to the often-securitized DDR and PRR approaches and guides UNDP to provide sustainable reintegration solutions for former members of armed forces and groups, their families and communities.

Glaucia brings over 20 years of experience in the UN system, of which 15 years with UNDP as a peacebuilding and development practitioner. She was part of the Bureau for Crisis Prevention and Recovery from 2006 to 2014 and the Bureau for Policy and Programme Support from 2014 to 2018 and has since then been with the Crisis Bureau. Her one-the-ground technical advice and support has spanned across several countries and regions over these years – Burundi, Central African Republic, Colombia, Comoros, Congo-Brazzaville, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Indonesia/Aceh, Iraq, Niger, Nigeria, The Philippines, Rwanda, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Uganda, Ukraine – and the Great Lakes and Lake Chad Basin regions and institutions.

Since 2018, Glaucia has provided dedicated technical assistance to the formulation of Prosecution, Rehabilitation and Reintegration (PRR) strategies within the framework of counterterrorism, with focus on community-based reintegration (in Iraq for families with perceived association with ISIL) and through regional approaches in the Lake Chad Basin countries (Cameroon, Chad, Niger, Nigeria in response to the Boko Haram Crisis).

Glaucia has a Law Degree (1990) from the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, and a PhD in International Relations with focus on Statebuilding/Peacebuilding (2005) from The Graduate Institute of International Studies, in Geneva, Switzerland.
