Hardy Giezendanner is a Senior Researcher for UNIDIR’s Conventional Arms and Ammunition Programme. He coordinates the research pillar on weapons and ammunition management.

His other areas of expertise and research interests include UN peace operations, UN arms embargoes, prevention of diversion, illicit arms and ammunition flows, counter-terrorism, and conflict prevention. Prior to re-joining UNIDIR, Hardy worked for the Arms Embargo Cell of the UN Organization Stabilization Mission in the DR Congo (MONUSCO), UNMAS, MONUSCO, Geneva Call and the Swiss Federal Department for Foreign Affairs.

He holds a master’s degree in International Relations, Peace and Security Studies from the Institute for International Studies in Barcelona, as well as a bachelor’s degree in International Relations from the University of Geneva.

Hardy has authored, co-authored, and contributed to numerous publications on conventional arms control. He speaks English, French, Spanish and (Swiss) German.

Mary Beth Altier is a Clinical Associate Professor at New York University’s Center for Global Affairs where she directs the Masters’ concentration in Transnational Security and Initiative on Emerging Threats. 

Mary Beth has over ten years’ experience researching the disengagement and reintegration of violent extremists. She has compiled and analyzed large scale datasets on violent extremist disengagement and re-engagement and conducted in-depth interviews with violent extremists representing a range of ideologies. She recently authored a report for the RESOLVE Network on lessons from over 382 studies of DDR for the reintegration of violent extremists and is working on studies that examine how information about rehabilitation and the framing of programming influence community acceptance of ex-combatants.  Her other research focuses on the social bases of support for political violence, and armed parties in particular, in developed and developing democracies.

Mary Beth’s research has been published in a number of journals including the Journal of Peace Research, Security Studies, Terrorism and Political Violence, Studies in Conflict and Terrorism, and International Studies Quarterly. She serves on the Editorial Board of Terrorism and Political Violence, Studies in Conflict and Terrorism, Perspectives on Terrorism, Journal of Deradicalization, and Behavioral Sciences of Terrorism and Political Aggression. Mary Beth is a member of the RESOLVE Network’s Research Advisory Council and AVERT Research Network. 

She received her PhD and MA in Politics from Princeton University and BAs in Mathematics and History from Drew University.

Dr Benedetta Berti is Head of Policy Planning in the Office of the Secretary General at NATO. She is also Associate Researcher at the Centre for Security, Diplomacy and Strategy at Vrije Universiteit Brussels, Visiting Professor at the College of Europe and a Senior Fellow at the Foreign Policy Research Institute.

An Eisenhower Global Fellow and a TED Senior Fellow, in the past decade Benedetta has held research and teaching positions at West Point, The Institute for National Security Studies and Tel Aviv University, among others. Her research focuses on armed groups, internal wars, and protection of civilians.

Dr. Berti is the author of four books, including “Armed Political Organizations. From Conflict to Integration” (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2013). Her work and research have appeared, among others, in Foreign Policy, Foreign Affairs, the National Interest, the Wall Street Journal and The New York Times; as well as in Civil Wars, Democratization, Government & Opposition, Mediterranean Politics, the Middle East Journal, Parameters, Studies in Conflict and Terrorism, Terrorism and Politica Violence.

She holds a BA in Oriental Studies from the University of Bologna, an MA and PhD in International Relations from The Fletcher School (Tufts University), and two post-doctorates in International Relations and Political Science, from Hebrew University and Ben Gurion University.

LtCol Tomas Abrahamsson is a Staff Officer in the Swedish Armed Forces.

He has extensive experience working with a number of different international organisations such as the EU and NATO, and has among other things been a focal point in the EU Task Forces on DDR and SSR.

He has also worked with contexts such as Bosnia-Hercegovina, Lebanon, Mozambique, Somalia, Iraq, Afghanistan in his different capacities.

LtCol Abrahamsson has throughout his career worked on issues relating to analysis and planning, logistics, national defence planning, security and EOD and demining.
