Simbarashe is also a research associate at Stellenbosch University in the department of Sociology and Social Anthropology. His research interests collectively contribute to an overarching theme of youth subjectivities and how these intersect in complex ways with various aspects of everyday life such as politics, livelihoods, and transitions. Simbarashe is also interested in questions around informality, religiosity, displacement, youth political expressions in spaces of protracted economic and political crisis.

Simbarashe was awarded the African Peacebuilding Network Research Fellowship (2021-2022) by the Social Sciences Research Council (SSRC), the African Humanities Programme Fellowship, from the American Learned Societies, Carnegie Corporation, New York, USA. Simbarashe’s recent publications are in African Affairs, the International Journal of Transitional Justice, African Security Review, African Identities, Political Psychology and the Extractive Industries and Society among other journals.

Mark has a focus on identifying business opportunities, assessing ESG (environmental, social and governance) risks, responsible business conduct, value chain analysis, Disarmament, Demobilization & Reintegration (DDR), conflict analysis, conflict-sensitivity and security & human rights. He has worked worldwide in many fragile settings, including Cameroon, Chad, Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Liberia, Mali, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Sudan, Sudan, Colombia, Iraq, Lebanon and Pakistan.

Over the last 15 years, Mark has focused on action-oriented research and consultancy work on how to strengthen investors’ and companies’ strategies and operational capacity to work in a responsible way in fragile settings, as well as to improve value chains and support SMEs, Internally Displaced Persons, refugees and former combatants, with the ultimate goal to contribute to equitable development and peace building. He has worked in various capacities in projects financed by multinational companies, universities, NGOs (including IDH, SOMO, Oxfam Novib, International Alert, MercyCorps), multilateral institutions (including World Bank Group/IFC, UNDP, UNHCR, IOM, ITC), the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Swedish Folke Bernadotte Academy and the European Union.

Mr. Diagne has in the last 20 years gained extensive experience in the field of DDR, and is adept in political and military dynamics of conflict given his background and work in MINUSMA combined with the expertise gained in ONUCI, MONUC and MONUSCO. During his time with the UN, Mr. Diagne has collected, analyzed and shared critical insights that facilitated the leadership’s decision on strategy and approaches to SSR/DDR.

As an active member of the implementation of the defense and security provisions of the Peace Agreement in Mali, which include SSR and DDR aspects, Mr. Diagne is attending and charing many different fora, including among others the SSR-DDR working group and secretary/focal point of the SSR-DDR strategic committee headed by the SRSG and attended by the ambassadors in the country.

In addition, Mr. Diagne has contributed to the drafting and finalizing of the accelerated DDR program to facilitate the disarmament and demobilization of 2200 combatants of signatories armed groups and the integration of 1765 of them into the Malian defense and security forces, the Community Rehabilitation Program designed for the Center of Mali, and the National DDR Strategy and program in Mali.

He is currently an independent consultant providing technical analysis, capacity enhancement and advisory services to UNDP-Nigeria and other international organizations in DDR, counter-terrorism and reintegration of formerly associated insurgents in the Lake Chad Basin Region.

Peter is an economist by training with a legal background and experienced management consultant in complex and dynamic political, conflict-affected and post-war environments. Most of this experience is in Horn of Africa, Great-Lakes Region and Lake Chad Basin in Africa, particularly in Uganda, Somalia, Kenya, Rwanda, Ethiopia, South Sudan and Nigeria. He also worked in countries such as Gambia and France in global policy formulation for human rights and gender mainstreaming. He has conducted reviews for publications on reintegration of formerly associated insurgents and conflict-affected persons and also co-authored “Deradicalisation and Disengagement in Somalia: Evidence from a Rehabilitation Programme for Former Members of Al-Shabaab.”

From 2007 to 2015, he was a Programme Officer with UNESCO in Uganda providing technical stewardship on programme design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation in the UNESCO’s areas competence. He also worked with Adam Smith International as Deputy Team Leader in Somalia (2015-2021) in the FCDO-funded Counter Extremism Programme. He is also Deputy Director at Security Research and Information Centre (SRIC), a Kenyan civil society organization that researches on the phenomenon of Small Arms and Light Weapons proliferation, and advocates for disarmament and arms control. SRIC is a member of the Africa Policy Cycle (APC). From 2007-2014, he served as Director for Peace and Security at the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) based in Burundi, where he coordinated Peace and Security programmes in 12 member states of the ICGLR.

He is a member of the Editorial Board of the Arms Trade Treaty Monitor (ATT) based in London, UK, and Associate Research Fellow at the Horn International Institute for Strategic Studies, where he is co-chair of the Maritime Working Group. He is involved in regional and global processes on arms control and management.

Singo is a trainer and facilitator at the International Peace Support Training Centre (IPSTC) based in Nairobi, Kenya where he trains on Conflict Analysis and Prevention, Dialogue, Negotiation, and mediation (DNM), DDR, SSR among others. He has researched and published on Small Arms and Light Weapons proliferation, the regional dimensions of conflict and peacebuilding, disarmament and arms control, terrorism, and governance.
