Her work focuses on the long-term reintegration of female and child ex-combatants, including gendered barriers to recognition, eligibility, social acceptance, political participation and post-war livelihoods. She has led participatory research and filmmaking processes with women ex-combatants in Aceh/Indonesia, Burundi, Colombia, Mindanao/Philippines, Nepal and Uganda, producing policy-facing analysis, public engagement and two participatory documentaries on women’s post-conflict experiences. Her PhD at the London School of Economics examined international actors’ engagement with child soldiering in Sierra Leone and Myanmar. She has designed and delivered trainings, university teaching and participatory learning processes on gender, peacebuilding, DDR/reintegration and participatory methods.

Evelyn combines academic research with training, facilitation, feminist MEL and policy-oriented learning. She has worked with organisations including the Berghof Foundation, LSE Centre for Women, Peace and Security, Agency for Peacebuilding, Justice Rapid Response, Impunity Watch, GCERF and Women Mediators across the Commonwealth.

Dr. Özerdem specializes in conflict resolution, peacebuilding, and reintegration of ex-combatants. With over 20 years of field research experience in Afghanistan, Bosnia-Herzegovina, El Salvador, Kosovo, Lebanon, Liberia, Nigeria, Philippines, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, and Turkey, Dr. Özerdem has undertaken numerous research projects that were funded by the UK’s Economic & Social Research Council (ESRC) (faith-based conflict prevention); British Academy (youth and peacebuilding); US Institute of Peace (reintegration of ex-combatants); and various European Union funding schemes (conflict transformation and leadership).

Dr. Özerdem has published extensively (15 books and numerous journal articles, book chapters, and op-eds) and, amongst others, is the author of Post-war Recovery: Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration (2008); co-author of Managing Emergencies and Crises (2011 & 2022); co-editor of Child Soldiers: From Recruitment to Reintegration (2011); co-author of Youth in Conflict and Peacebuilding: Mobilization, Reintegration and Reconciliation (2015); co-editor of Local Ownership in International Peacebuilding (2015); co-author of Peacebuilding: An Introduction (2015); co-editor of Comparing Peace Processes (2019); co-editor of Routledge Handbook of Peace, Security and Development (2020), and co-editor of Routledge Handbook of Conflict Response and Leadership in Africa (2021).

Mr. Diagne has in the last 20 years gained extensive experience in the field of DDR, and is adept in political and military dynamics of conflict given his background and work in MINUSMA combined with the expertise gained in ONUCI, MONUC and MONUSCO. During his time with the UN, Mr. Diagne has collected, analyzed and shared critical insights that facilitated the leadership’s decision on strategy and approaches to SSR/DDR.

As an active member of the implementation of the defense and security provisions of the Peace Agreement in Mali, which include SSR and DDR aspects, Mr. Diagne is attending and charing many different fora, including among others the SSR-DDR working group and secretary/focal point of the SSR-DDR strategic committee headed by the SRSG and attended by the ambassadors in the country.

In addition, Mr. Diagne has contributed to the drafting and finalizing of the accelerated DDR program to facilitate the disarmament and demobilization of 2200 combatants of signatories armed groups and the integration of 1765 of them into the Malian defense and security forces, the Community Rehabilitation Program designed for the Center of Mali, and the National DDR Strategy and program in Mali.
