Her work focuses on the long-term reintegration of female and child ex-combatants, including gendered barriers to recognition, eligibility, social acceptance, political participation and post-war livelihoods. She has led participatory research and filmmaking processes with women ex-combatants in Aceh/Indonesia, Burundi, Colombia, Mindanao/Philippines, Nepal and Uganda, producing policy-facing analysis, public engagement and two participatory documentaries on women’s post-conflict experiences. Her PhD at the London School of Economics examined international actors’ engagement with child soldiering in Sierra Leone and Myanmar. She has designed and delivered trainings, university teaching and participatory learning processes on gender, peacebuilding, DDR/reintegration and participatory methods.

Evelyn combines academic research with training, facilitation, feminist MEL and policy-oriented learning. She has worked with organisations including the Berghof Foundation, LSE Centre for Women, Peace and Security, Agency for Peacebuilding, Justice Rapid Response, Impunity Watch, GCERF and Women Mediators across the Commonwealth.

Since 2013, Priscyll has worked extensively in research and the NGO sector in the field of DDR, transitional justice, gender-based violence in armed conflicts and mine action. Particularly, in Colombia and Nepal, she has engaged with different stakeholders, such as children and adolescent victims of the armed conflict, DDR practitioners, men, women and queer (ex)-combatants, military and police personnels, public officials, and women and feminist grassroots organizations.

Priscyll’s research focuses on the political agency and participation of women and queer people that have joined non-state armed groups and the difficulties of navigating the transition to “civilian society” in the aftermath of peace deals. Within this scope, she has explored understudied areas of DDR, such as family ties, parenthood, youth agency, political militancy as well as embodied and emotional aspect of transitions from war-to-peace. Priscyll has also developed alternative forms of pedagogies and methods to work in complex settings and with different actors. She has extensively published in renowned peer-review journals in the field of DDR, and she is the co-author of the graphic novel Militancia feminista post-lucha armada de las farianas (2024) with Zulay Carolina Rueda.

He holds a doctorate in International Affairs and Governance from the University of St.Gallen and a Master of Arts in History from the University of Basel. Prior to his work at the CSS, he spent several years in Colombia, where he worked as a post-​doc for the Universidad de los Andes and as a lecturer for the Universidad Nacional in Bogotá. He conducted further post-​doctoral research at the Institute of Latin American Studies at Stockholm University. He is affiliated with various research organizations, including the Folke Bernadotte Academy and Swisspeace.

His academic research is concentrated in three broad research areas, with the overall goal of preventing violence. First, he has extensively studied peace and violence in Colombia, including the reintegration of ex-​combatants, reconciliation, transitional justice, statebuilding, post-​war violence and urban crime. Second, he has analyzed the consequences of terrorist attacks on public opinion and emotion, mainly focusing on Western Europe. Third, he has worked on lynching violence across Latin America, as part of a project funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation.

An Eisenhower Global Fellow and a TED Senior Fellow, in the past decade Benedetta has held research and teaching positions at West Point, The Institute for National Security Studies and Tel Aviv University, among others. Her research focuses on armed groups, internal wars, and protection of civilians.

Dr. Berti is the author of four books, including “Armed Political Organizations. From Conflict to Integration” (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2013). Her work and research have appeared, among others, in Foreign Policy, Foreign Affairs, the National Interest, the Wall Street Journal and The New York Times; as well as in Civil Wars, Democratization, Government & Opposition, Mediterranean Politics, the Middle East Journal, Parameters, Studies in Conflict and Terrorism, Terrorism and Politica Violence.

Khaled has accumulated an expertise in supporting national stakeholders to design and implement complex DDR and CVR programs that had led to significant peace consolidation. As a senior staff of UN Peacekeeping operations, and given his background as a professional diplomat with the government of Egypt, Khaled was a pioneer in negotiating sensitive Security Council mandates on DDR, CVR and SSR and other stabilization measures with national authorities both at the civilian and the military levels to ensure a transparent, inclusive, gender and human rights based processes that would lead to effective DDR processes and programs.

He has been praised for his innovative approaches and some of the programs he conceived have been considered as an added value to international Best Practice. He also played a strategic role in providing political and security advice to UN senior leadership including DPO, UNCT and UN Humanitarian country teams (HCT) on DDR, CVR and SSR issues and their impact on the overall mandated objectives of the UN particularly in Protection of Civilians, Restoration of State Authority and supporting complex and participatory political processes. Khaled has also played a crucial role in advocacy and resource mobilization given his long experiences in coordinating multiple DDR stakeholders both at national and international levels.

Khaled worked in several countries in the African continent, such Sudan, South Sudan, Côte d’Ivoire, Mali, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Central African Republic (CAR). He also served in other conflict-affected settings such as Lybia and Yemen. He is currently the Principal Coordinator of the Stabilization Support Unit in the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the DRC.

Khaled is fully bilingual (English- French). His mother tongue is Arabic and he is also fluent in Italian.

She served in the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) as Head of DDR Section in 2017-2018, based in Mogadishu; as DDR Officer, Head of the “Operations & Projects Cell, in MINUSCA (United Nations Mission in Central African Republic), from March 2015 to March 2017; in MONUSCO (UN Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo) as DDR/RR Team Leader/North Kivu from March 2013 to March 2015, based in Goma; in UNMIS (UN Mission in Sudan), based in Wau/Western Bahr-el Ghazal State, and in UNMISS (UN Mission in South Sudan), based in Juba, as Civil Affairs Officer from end 2010 to March 2013; in the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq as Humanitarian Affairs Officer, based in Baghdad, from July 2009 to December 2010; in the United Nations Operation in Ivory Coast (UNOCI) as DDR Officer between 2007 and 2009.

She served as Reintegration Expert for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in the period 2004-2006, in a programme for reintegration of ex-combatants and community recovery in the eastern D.R. Congo. She worked in Kosovo from October 2001 to March 2004 for an International NGO, implementing projects for the socio-economic reintegration of people with disabilities.

Prior to these work experiences in post-conflict contexts, she worked in Italy, her home country, in various programmes for socio-economic reintegration of vulnerable groups (people with disabilities, ex-detainees, ex-drug addicts, immigrant women victims of trafficking).

Ms Zenaide Gatelli holds a University Degree in Sociology and a Masters Degree in Peacebuilding and Conflict Management from the University of Trento (Italy).

He received his DPhil in International Relations from the University of Oxford and has published research on ex-combatant reintegration and postwar veterans’ transition in International Peacekeeping; Review of International Studies; Third World Quarterly; Civil Wars; and the International Feminist Journal of Politics. His 2013 monograph, Ex-Combatants and the Post-Conflict State: Challenges of Reintegration, was published in Palgrave Macmillan’s ‘Rethinking Political Violence’ series.

He directed and produced a documentary short film series on everyday peace, Liberia: Legacies of Peace (2019) and wrote a 2020 report, ‘The Legacy of DDR in Liberia’, for the Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration Section at the United Nations Department of Peace Operations.
